I have a friend who is looking to get a new computer to tool around his house with.  He is thinking about a netbook and is asking my advice.  I have never used one so I am having trouble advising him to get anything other than a Desktop because to say his current desktop is a stinking pile of shit would be an insult to feces everywhere.

My advice is to replace his current desktop then to consider a netbook later, but, I may be biased.  (Hell, I want my next computer to be a Macbook Pro to burst my Mac cherry).

He is not looking to play any real games on it and wants a computer for surfing the internet and using word, excel etc.

Any opinions on how I should guide my friend or a general discussion on Netbook vs Laptop during the Widget would help also.

Thanks,
Maj

If he is not really doing processor/memory intensive things like gaming or video/3D rendering on it, I'd say try and find a Dell Mini 9 (it has to be a Mini 9) as it fully supports OSX and runs really well/quickly with it.

Well one major thing is to make sure that he is comfortable with using a smaller netbook. So that might be a major thing to consider before anything.

My pre-wife would like a netbook but she has to do a lot of typing so a smaller netbook would not be comfortable.

Has he/she got big manly hands? (joking)

I bought my wife a Mini 9 a while back, upgraded the memory to 2GB and stuck OSX on it, along with Office 08, Photoshop, Aperture, Illustrator and InDesign, all of which run a lot better than on a G5. She now uses it more than the 15" MacBook Pro I got her to get her away form the shitty old HP thing she use to lug around. She is a teacher and has to type a lot and does not find it an issue.

My opinion is thus:

I'm over the whole netbook craze. I hoped on when it they were new, found myself never using it because the keyboard and screen resolution were just too small. Newer ones are a little better, but the whole concept of a netbook is about compromise.

Tell him to just go snag a cheap 15" laptop on sale somewhere.

And Metatron, seriously, his buddy isn't a techie, so there's probably less than a 1% chance he'd ever try and get OS X on it.

Fair enough, Dell do some great deals on reconditioned laptops. Stick Windows 7 on it and you've got something that will last for years.

I am currently running the mini 9 with OSX until I can get a mac book pro...or something better. But yeah if they are not really that techie, and don't really want to spend the money on a mac...go cheap Dell. Not great but better than nothing.  If you can spend the money, go with one of the new MacBook Pros as they are beautiful, and the 13" is an amazing size. Plus you get the entire ilife suite ect.  Just my two cents.

I would say undoubtedly less than 0.0001% chance.

Ok, I will push him toward the cheaper laptop.  I tried to steer him away from the netbook on the premise of more bang/$ but he just sees it cheaper and smaller and figures its good enough.

If however he does decided I to with the netbook, please steer him towards the Dell Mini 9 due to the fact that it is probably the nicest quality, and has a beautiful price point.

Ya I never really gotten in to the whole "netbook" shpeal. I don't get why you would pay for like a couple of gens ago technology. I mean who uses a single core now days? Like this for example:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmprd116000050012&skuId=9999115900050012&type=product

Who would want to pay 300 bucks for something like that in when you can buy this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9454253&type=product&id=1218106990994

This has a 2x, 3 GB of ram and more HDD room than a netbook. Last time I check laptops are kind of smallish too.

Well its not really "couple of gens ago technology" and you don't need dual core and 3GB to do most things. What you gain is battery life in most cases, cheap laptops tend to get anywhere from 2-4 hours of battery life at best, I've got 8-9 hours out of a few netbooks. You also get portability.

Web surfing certainly doesn't need a dual core. Nor do most basic to mid-range tasks.

And if anything, netbooks are packing cutting edge technology in a lot of cases. The Atom is a pretty high tech little device, and certainly more modern than the couple of year old Core 2 Duo chips that most laptops (including the MacBook Pro I'm on now) are packing.

Just sayin'. Cheesy
