So this year is the first tome I've actually followed World Cup. And I need a little guidance from those if you with more experience under your belt.
Is football always like this, with any goal having a 50-50 chance if actually counting? Are the awful calls and bad officiating a part if World Cup (or football for that matter) or is this an unusually atrocious year?
Just need to know if I'm gonna start following football from now on.

To be honest this has been an atrocious World Cup. The refereeing hasn't been consistent, the players are diving/cheating more than ever, the stadiums aren't always full and lack atmosphere, the bloody vuvuzela's and the lack of the Irish international team . Japan/Korea in 2002 and Germany in 2006 were more entertaining tournaments in my opinion.

I've watched a number of matches, and while there's been a lot of really good play, two negatives stand out.
One is the lack of instant replay. Not having it on a stage this large is inexcusable to me, particularly when it results in things like Luis Fabiano scoring a goal after illegally touching the ball with each of his arms.
Also, there's a ridiculous amount of diving and injury-faking, made even worse by the fact that they do it so badly. My guess is that the players know this but the stakes are simply high enough to make it worth risking a penalty in-game and fan backlash afterward.

So you're saying this is not typical.
Because if I decide that I want to get more into soccer...er, football, I'd like to know if this is what I can expect from "normal," non-World Cup games.

I'm not a soccer fan, nor have I followed it closely, but I've seen enough comments online for a long enough time to suspect that if Hollywood gave out Oscars for acting in soccer, it would have its hands full keeping up with the European leagues/World Cup. Is there a penalty for diving? If so, I'm guessing it is badly written and/or badly enforced.

I'm English and I could not care less about football. Rugby is the only sport I can stand.

Edie, if you're interested to see if it's a sport you could get really into, I'd say ignore the World Cup and just go to an MLS game if there's a team near you. There's a lot less hype, a lot less diving and injury-faking, and most importantly, there won't be any vuvuzelas there. (:

Been watching soccer for a few years.
Honestly, if you want to watch athletes play the game and not do a bunch of acting, I think your best bet is probably the women's game.
Women's Professional Soccer is in its second season. There is a game every weekend on Fox Soccer Channel. You're local team would be the FC Gold Pride.
Watch now and you'll be all set for the World Cup next year, and you will actually see a US Team that is of world class quality.

Okay... sorta related note....
Netherlands and Spain?!?!?!
Really?!!?
Okay, Spain I can see... but Holland???
I totally pegged them for eliminations in the quarter finals. Goes to show how much *I* know about soccer.

That's the one where the US has a really good team with a strong chance to win (though Brazil and Germany are at least their equals)
