So we're in the process of getting ready for putting game reviews on the website.

Gotta question: What do you think about "ratings systems"? You know, the "we give it a nine out of 10," or "four out of five."

Stars? Little guy sitting, standing, snoozing? Whatever.

I know a lot of people love them because they're easy to understand. A lot of people hate them because they seem so arbitrary sometimes.

What do you think? Should we just not having a ratings system at all and rely solely on the review?

And if we do some kind of numerical rating system, what would our "symbol" be? What would our range be (zero to five? Zero to 10? Zero to 100?)

How about skip the numbers and rate the games on how they make you feel.  Like Day 1 purchase, Sale price, Rental, Bargain Bin, Bullshit.

I think they are a necessary evil, and suspect that a lot of people will skip a review if it doesn't have a quick takeaway summary.  I always liked the way the old EGM did reviews at the time they died - letter grades with pluses/minuses.  My problem with numbers is that at least to me it invites a lot more nitpickiness which is worst on a 1-100 scale.  Giant Bomb, which I respect a lot, does a 1-5 star rating (no half stars) which I could live with as well.

You know, I've occasionally thought about that kind of system - OXM does a simplified version when they review DLC - Buy, Fanboys Only, Deny.

My system would be pretty simple.

Buy It.
Borrow It.
Bury it.

Hey... I'm kinda liking that. Lends to a nice graphics.

Dog sitting up with bill in mouth.
Dog sitting, wagging tail.
Dog buring it.
Dog peeing on it.

Heh... I like where this is going...

You need at least one meh/neutral option, like dog looking confused/head cocked at it, or with back turned to it, or something.

It would be a unique system, I will give it that!  Imagine what Metacritic would do with it.  Grin

I like this idea for a ratings system. Maybe add an "Only if friends are buying it" or some shorter version of that.

Will's idea is essentially a five point/star rating system, and in reading a great article over at Bitmob that might be the best way to go (though perhaps with a Gamehounds twist like Edie suggested.)

I think we're re-inventing the wheel.  Siskel and Ebert got it right the first time.  I say video game critics take a que from the 'thumbs up and thumbs down' system.  Quick yes or no.  Find a source you trust and take it from there
